I don't think people are too happy about "the Office guy" being Cap, but he at least looks like pre-SSS formula Steve Rogers.

I think he has the buff potential:

So, Chris Evans, apparently:

I'm not sure how I feel about this. I've never seen him in a movie where I loved him or thought he was great in it, but it's not like he had the greatest material to work with in those movies, either (Fantastic Four, Push). And he wasn't bad in either of them, just not stand out.

Ok, I like him a bit more now... but, still...

I'm not for him, and that's not just because he's already Johnny Storm.I'm just not seeing how he fits the role.

It's kinda weird because he's always the smart aleck guy but I'm ok with it. And hey,at least it's not Channing Tatum.

That's funny, because Channing looks more to me like a Cap than anyone else has. Too bad he stinks.

Chris Evans ("Fantastic Four" films) has accepted Marvel Studios' offer for him to play Steve Rogers/Captain America in the Joe Johnston-directed The First Avenger: Captain America. Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely wrote the script.

Marvel would not comment on the development, but we expect the official announcement will be made soon.

The deal calls for Evans to star in at least three "Captain America" movies, with the first hitting theaters on July 22, 2011.

Not sure how I feel about this........

At a WonderCon press roundtable for Sylvain White's The Losers, the elephant in the room was addressed and Chris Evans was asked why he wanted to play the role of Steve Rogers in Marvel's The First Avenger: Captain America. After all, Evans already has played another iconic Marvel comic character when he took on the role of Johnny Storm a.k.a The Human Torch in two "Fantastic Four" movies and besides his role in the comic-based "Losers," he's also playing action star Lucas Lee in Edgar Wright's upcoming Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

At first, Evans was slightly hesitant at answering, knowing full well the question was coming, as would be expected when you're at a comic convention with lots of press interested in genre fare. After a bit of stammering, he finally said what interested him in playing another comic book role:

"I think Marvel is doing a lot of good things right now, and it's a fun character. Even if it wasn't a comic book. I think the story of Steve Rogers is great. He's a great guy. Even if it was just a script about anybody, I would probably want to do it. So it wasn't necessarily about the comic itself. He's a great character. He's a great character to play. He just happens to be a comic book character."

Still not sold..........

The Los Angeles Times also learned that Emily Blunt was made an offer but passed on playing Peggy Carter alongside Chris Evans in The First Avenger: Captain America. The other actresses on that short list? Keira Knightley and Alice Eve.

I'd heard that he was going to be cast, but I thought he was playing MODOK.

He's got a neotonous look to him that says "young", and I guess that's what they're looking for. What bothers me about both him and Evans is that they don't look like particularly happy people, like there's an undercurrent of sadness or pain running through both of them. (Evans frequently has that hangdog look, and this guy has a slight squint to the eyes that suggests smiling through the pain. At least, that's how he strikes me.) That doesn't seem like a good fit for Cap and Bucky, who stay positive despite a lot of unhappiness in their lives. But, who knows, maybe they'll be fine?

Wow, "neotonous." You win!

Cap has the weight of keeping America free on his shoulders. You see the cover of that comic with Cap firing a machine gun? That's his frustration at oppressive regimes attempting to spread their filth throughout the world.

Bucky's just sad-looking 'cause of the big forehead jokes.

That, and being known as the "Boy Wonder" his whole life. (That is Bucky, right?)

It seems now every day, there's at least one more story coming out of Marvel Studios developing film slate. After yesterday's bombshell rumor that Joss Whedon was close to locking in a deal to direct "The Avengers." today the Hollywood Reporter has word that actress Hayley Atwell has been cast as Peggy Carter in the upcoming "The First Avenger: Captain America."

While the story contains to official word from either Marvel or Atwell's representatives, THR did successfully break the news that Chris Evans had been cast as the Joe Johnston-directed film's lead role of Steve Rogers. And the casting of the young British native as the female lead falls right in line with the widely reported news that Marvel was looking at English actresses from Emily Blunt to Keira Knightley for the part.
