Strangers with Comics Episode 119: Oscar Fever!

Postby Tony on Tue Mar 09, 2010 11:51 pm

Another episode of Strangers with Comics appears! We start things off with the segments. In Week in Geek, Rob talks about Steam coming to the Mac and reading the Kick Ass trade. Gabe enjoys the single life and discusses the movie version of The Rocketeer. Tony changes work schedules and reviews the collapse of the Fresno Metropolitan Museum. In our TV and movie round-up, we talk Big Love, An Education, A Serious Man, Dead Snow, 2012 and Alice and Wonderland.

In our main segment we discuss the best picture Academy Awards and what we felt about each of the nominees. We also go on some more about being terrible and wonderful at the same time. Finally we extol the virtues of The Hurt Locker and convince Gabe to give it a try.

The weekly comics break down like this:
Books we liked included Adventure Comics, Amazing Spider Man, True Story Swear to God, First Wave, Nemisis: The Imposters and Hitmonkey.
Books we didn’t so much care for included Green Hornet, Demo, Chase Variant, Sparta U.S.A, Detective Comics and Ultimate Avengers.

Thanks for listening and be sure to leave us some feedback here or call our voice feedback line at 206-426-1744.

Well thats how our picks played out. We each pick two or three of each category but that doesn't mean we all agree that a pick is good or bad. Rob was very amused by Hitmonkey. I found the silliness kind of dumb but he chose it as one of his picks. Gabe was the only one who read Green Hornet so I may have liked it but I haven't had a chance to read it.

OK, for the record, I think you guys need to support Gabe getting dumped more often. Wow, I was actually laughing with him instead of at him. Very funny. Who knew, Gabe + heartache = funny.

Alrighty, on to the comics.

Can't tell you how happy I was to hear that you're reading Amazing Spider-Man. This is always at the top of my stack, great book. Fun, full of action and always really well drawn by a surprisingly talented and diverse group of artists. Ultimate Avengers. Loven this book. Simple plot but with enough little cool twists to keep you focused. Most of all though it is the incredible art and cinematic layouts, like watching a great action movie. This Ultimate Cap is the best version of Cap by far. I was also very impressed by the one shot Punisher MAX Butterfly. The story isn't about Frank at all but it was a huge cut above what you expect to get in most comics, this was art. Great storytelling, images that perfectly match the feel of the story, highly highly recommended.

The Oscars; Look, I know they wanted to save money but did they have to work so hard to make it show. It felt low budget the whole way through. Ahhhh, what can I say that hasn't been said....zzzzzzzzzzzz.

See ya in a week.
